Instagram to pause ‘TikTok-like features’

Image
Instagram will pause features that users have campaigned against and complained make the social network too much like TikTok, according to a report in the Platformer tech newsletter. Celebrity sisters Kim Kardashian and Kylie Jenner were some of the most vocal users to have posted messages on social media this week calling for the company to “make Instagram Instagram again” and stop trying to be like TikTok. The slogan sprang from a Change.org petition that had received more than 229,000 signatures as of late Thursday. “Let’s go back to our roots with Instagram and remember that the intention behind Instagram was to share photos, for Pete’s sake,” the petition read. Instagram chief Adam Mosseri had responded to the controversy earlier this week with a video on Twitter in which he said the features were a work in progress, and being tested with a small number of users. Changes included playing up short-form video, displaying it full-screen the way TikTok does, and recommending pos...

China launches second of three space station modules

Image
China on Sunday launched the second of three modules needed to complete its new space station, state media reported, the latest step in Beijing’s ambitious space programme. The un-crewed craft, named Wentian, was propelled by a Long March 5B rocket at 2:22pm (0622 GMT) from the Wenchang launch centre on China’s tropical island of Hainan. A quarter of an hour later, an official from the China Manned Space Agency (CMSA) confirmed the “success” of the launch. Hundreds of people gathered on nearby beaches to take photos of the launcher rising through the air in a plume of white smoke. After around eight minutes of flight, “the Wentian lab module successfully separated from the rocket and entered its intended orbit, making the launch a complete success,” the CMSA said. Beijing launched the central module of its space station Tiangong — which means “heavenly palace” — in April 2021. Almost 18-metre long and weighing 22 tonnes, the new module has three sleeping areas and space for scie...

WHO declares global health emergency over monkeypox

The World Health Organization on Saturday has activated its highest alert level for the growing monkeypox outbreak, declaring the virus a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC), WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said. The decision was made after WHO's expert team held a second meeting to discuss the situation, though the Emergency Committee didn't reach a consensus. "In short, we have an outbreak that has spread around the world rapidly, through new modes of transmission, about which we understand too little," Tedros said. Tedros also made it clear that for the time being the monkeypox outbreak is "concentrated among men who have sex with men, especially those with multiple sexual partners." "That means that this is an outbreak that can be stopped with the right strategies in the right groups," he added. Tedros called for all countries to "work closely with communities of men who have sex with men," a...

Scientists sure Webb telescope has found oldest known galaxy

Image
Just a week after its first images were shown to the world, the James Webb Space Telescope may have found a galaxy that existed 13.5 billion years ago, a scientist who analysed the data said on Wednesday. Known as GLASS-z13, the galaxy dates back to 300 million years after the Big Bang, about 100 million years earlier than anything previously identified, Rohan Naidu of the Harvard Center for Astrophysics said. “We’re potentially looking at the most distant starlight that anyone has ever seen,” he said. The more distant objects are from us, the longer it takes for their light to reach us, and so to gaze back into the distant universe is to see into the deep past. Although GLASS-z13 existed in the earliest era of the universe, its exact age remains unknown as it could have formed anytime within the first 300 million years. GLASS-z13 was spotted in so-called “early release” data from the orbiting observatory’s main infrared imager, called NIRcam — but the discovery was not revealed...

October trial set in Musk, Twitter buyout battle

Image
Twitter and Elon Musk were ordered on Tuesday to trial in October over whether the Tesla chief can be forced to complete his $44 billion deal to buy the social network, an early win for the uncertainty-wracked platform. A judge in the eastern US state of Delaware ruled against Musk’s push for a February date, while hewing closely to Twitter’s desire for an expedited schedule. Billions of dollars are at stake, but so is the future of the platform that Musk has said should allow any legal speech, an absolutist position that has sparked fears the network could be used to incite violence. “We urge the court to enter a prompt schedule and give multiple grounds for that,” Twitter lawyer William Savitt argued, noting “the continued uncertainty caused by Musk’s purported termination inflicts harm on Twitter every day, every hour of every day.” Musk’s team had argued fiercely against an expedited trial date, saying Twitter’s preferred date in September was simple too fast for such a compl...

TikTok removes 12.5m videos from Pakistan in first quarter of 2022

Image
Popular video-sharing platform TikTok has said that it removed nearly 12.5 million videos from Pakistan in the first quarter (January to March) of 2022 for violating community guidelines, placing the country second on the list of largest volume of videos removed. In a press release, TikTok said as per the latest "Community Guidelines Enforcement Report", Pakistan had a removal rate of 96.5 per cent before any views and 97.3pc before 24 hours. The report reflects the platform’s ongoing commitment to earn trust by being accountable while working to be safe and welcoming. Efforts include fostering authentic engagement across the comment space, safety reminders for creators and adhering strictly to the extensive community guidelines, it said. "A proactive removal rate of 98.5 per cent was used by TikTok to remove 12,490,309 Pakistani videos," the press release said. With these figures, Pakistan ranks second in the world for the largest volume of videos taken down ...

Amazon pauses work on six new U.S. office buildings to weigh hybrid work needs

Image
Amazon.com Inc is pausing the construction of six new office buildings in Bellevue and Nashville to reevaluate the designs to suit hybrid work, the tech giant said on Friday. The pausing and delay of construction will not affect Amazon's hiring plans, a company spokesperson said, reiterating the firm's proposal to create 25,000 jobs in Bellevue and another 5,000 in Nashville. "The pandemic has significantly changed the way people work ... Our offices are long-term investments and we want to make sure that we design them in a way that meets our employees' needs in the future," said John Schoettler, vice president of Global Real Estate and Facilities at Amazon. Separately, Bloomberg News reported on Friday that Facebook parent Meta Platforms and Amazon have pulled back on their office expansion plans in New York City. Meta has decided not to take an additional 300,000 square feet of space at 770 Broadway, a building near Astor Place where it is already located...

Meta finally releases first human rights report

Image
Facebook owner Meta released its first annual human rights report on Thursday, following years of accusations that it turned a blind eye to online abuses that fueled real-world violence in places like India and Myanmar. The report, which covers due diligence performed in 2020 and 2021, includes a summary of a controversial human rights impact assessment of India that Meta commissioned law firm Foley Hoag to conduct. Human rights groups including Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch have demanded the release of the India assessment in full, accusing Meta of stalling in a joint letter sent in January. In its summary, Meta said the law firm had noted the potential for "salient human rights risks" involving Meta's platforms, including "advocacy of hatred that incites hostility, discrimination, or violence." The assessment, it added, did not probe "accusations of bias in content moderation." Ratik Asokan, a representative from India Civil Wat...

Facebook to allow up to five profiles tied to one account

Image
Meta Platforms Inc said on Thursday its flagship social network Facebook is introducing ways for users to maintain up to five profiles, a major shift from the "real name" requirement the company has maintained since its inception. The product change would "help people tailor their experience based on interests and relationships," like posting different types of content aimed at family versus friends, Meta said in a statement. The company will continue to require that each user have only one Facebook account, with the main profile that continues to use the person's real name. People will be able to access any additional profiles they create after logging in to that account. The change grants users formal leeway to semi-anonymize their identity on the world's biggest social network, in keeping with options offered by competitors like TikTok and Twitter, as well as Meta's own photo and video app Instagram. In its statement, Meta said its rules against...

SpaceX Starship booster 'probably' returning to pad after explosion

Image
The Starship rocket booster SpaceX plans to use for an inaugural flight to orbit will "probably" return to its launch mount in Texas next week following a testing explosion on Monday, the company's chief executive, Elon Musk, told. "Damage is minor, but booster will be transferred back to the high bay for inspections, returning to the launch stand probably next week," Musk said in an email. The booster, the towering first half of SpaceX's next-generation Starship rocket system, was undergoing pre-launch tests on a stand on Monday when its engine section burst into flames, sending a shock wave miles across the South Texas facility. SpaceX has launched early prototypes of Starship's top half some 6 miles (9.66 km) above ground a handful of times in the past, but never has the company launched the fully stacked, nearly 400 foot (121.92 m)-tall rocket system to orbit, a significantly more challenging task. The company has targeted the end of summer for...

Gangster admits to have plotting Salman Khan’s murder: reports

Image
Indian gangster Lawrence Bishnoi reportedly confessed to the police that he attempted to murder Bollywood star Salman Khan in 2018. According to Pinkvilla, the Delhi police is currently interrogating Bishnoi for his involvement in singer Sidhu Moose Wala’s murder in late May. Amidst the investigation, the gangster allegedly admitted to have plotted the Ek Tha Tiger star’s murder in 2018. According to reports, he said that the shooter he hired couldn’t get a clear shot because he was using a pistol. Bishnoi then purchased an RK Spring rifle worth Rs1.1 million to get the job done. Times of India cited a source and stated, “Sampat Nehra, a key member of the Bishnoi gang, went to Mumbai a couple of years back and he stayed there with the intention of killing Salman Khan. When Sampat Nehra was arrested in 2018, he also revealed the gang’s plan to kill Salman Khan. A rifle was also seized from Sampat Nehra which was purchased for this purpose.” The Bajrangi Bhaijaan actor and his fath...

Scientists find chemical that can heal wounds twice as fast

Image
Scientists from Israel have found a natural chemical that can heal wounds two times faster. The chemical was tested out on pigs, after which experts hoped the same properties would work on humans. The chemical, which could be a medical breakthrough, is called Diindolylmethane or DIM. It is found in a variety of vegetables like cauliflower and broccoli. DIM has been known to scientists and they previously believed it could destroy cancer cells. When tested on pigs in combination with antibiotics, researchers found that pigs that were treated with just antibiotics took an average of 10 days to heal where as the DIM-treated wounds took five. The findings were published in the journal Pharmaceutics. Professor Ariel Kushmaro, a researcher in the study called the chemical “a game-changer.” While an antibiotic kills the bacteria, DIM does not kill it. With dead bacteria, a layer of dead tissue and dead bacteria itself is left behind. In the case of DIM, on the other hand, there is no ...

Twitter back online after brief outage

Image
The famous micro-blogging website Twitter was restored in Pakistan and across the world after about an hour of outage. Earlier, Downdetector reported that people have been unable to log in to their accounts, meaning they also can't post or view any tweets. It's the go-to social media app for users around the world, but it appeared that Twitter had crashed. The platform was restored after an hour, however, the reason behind the outage if still unknown. Downdetector tracks outages by collating status reports from a series of sources, including user-submitted errors on its platform. The outage could have affected a larger number of users. The last time Twitter suffered from an outage like this was earlier this year when the company explained that the issue arose from “some trouble with our internal systems”. admin.web@suchtv.pk (Web Desk) from Science & Technology - SUCH TV https://ift.tt/6gmrqY7 https://ift.tt/tAYcHme

Cancer drug can restore damaged spinal nerves: Study

Image
Researchers at the University of Birmingham revealed that a candidate drug can restore damaged spinal nerves. The experimental drug, known as AZD1390, is under examination by AstraZeneca to block sensitivity to cancer cells from radiation treatment. So far, researchers found through an animal and cell model that the drug, when taken orally, can block trauma to DNA damage in nerve cells and restore sensory and motor function after a spinal injury. “Our findings show a remarkable recovery of sensory and motor functions, and AZD1390-treated animals being indistinguishable from uninjured animals within four weeks of injury,” said Professor Zubair Ahmed, from the University’s Institute of Inflammation and Aging, in a university release.   from Health - SUCH TV https://ift.tt/XN3Cipe https://ift.tt/VWq7RE2 admin.web@suchtv.pk (Web Desk) https://ift.tt/XN3Cipe

Robot fish that can gobble up microplastics

Image
Robot fish that "eat" microplastics may one day help to clean up the world's polluted oceans, says a team of Chinese scientists from Sichuan University in southwest China. Soft to touch and just 1.3 centimetres (0.5 inch) in size, these robots already suck up microplastics in shallow water. The team aims to enable them to collect microplastics in deeper water and provide information to analyse marine pollution in real time, said Wang Yuyan, one of the researchers who developed the robot. "We developed such a lightweight miniaturised robot. It can be used in many ways, for example in biomedical or hazardous operations, such a small robot that can be localised to a part of your body to help you eliminate some disease." The black robot fish is irradiated by a light, helping it to flap its fins and wiggle its body. Scientists can control the fish using the light to avoid it crashing into other fish or ships. If it is accidentally eaten by other fish, it can b...

China space tourism prospects boosted by cooperation agreement

Image
A Chinese space tech company said on Wednesday it had signed a cooperation agreement with the country's largest state-owned travel corporation, the latest sign that the arrival of a domestic "space tourism" industry is near. CAS Space signed a strategic cooperation agreement with a wholly-owned subsidiary of Hong Kong-based travel industry giant China Tourism Group, pledging to "jointly promote the application of commercial space technology and create a new space economy such as space tourism," according to a statement published on CAS Space's official WeChat account. "Both parties will...make positive contributions to (helping) China progress from a big space power to a strong space power," CAS Space chairman Yang Yiqing was quoted as saying. Yang also told state-run media outlet China Daily in an interview on Wednesday that the company would start to conduct sub-orbital test flights next year. Only after a dozen of these trips would the comp...

Twitter sues Elon Musk to hold him to $44 billion deal

Image
Twitter Inc sued Elon Musk on Tuesday for violating his $44 billion deal to buy the social media platform and asked a Delaware court to order the world's richest person to complete the merger at the agreed $54.20 per Twitter share. "Musk apparently believes that he - unlike every other party subject to Delaware contract law - is free to change his mind, trash the company, disrupt its operations, destroy stockholder value, and walk away," said the complaint. The lawsuit sets in motion what promises to be one of the biggest legal showdowns in Wall Street history, involving one of the business world's most colorful entrepreneurs in a case that will turn on staid contract language. On Friday, Musk said he was terminating the deal because Twitter violated the agreement by failing to respond to requests for information regarding fake or spam accounts on the platform, which is fundamental to its business performance. Musk, who is the chief executive officer of electric...

WHO warns Covid-19 pandemic 'nowhere near over'

Image
World Health Organisation (WHO) chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said he was worried that coronavirus case numbers were shooting up, putting more strain on health systems and workers. The number of Covid cases reported to the WHO increased 30 per cent in the past two weeks, driven by sub-variants of the Omicron strain and the lifting of control measures. "New waves of the virus demonstrate again that Covid-19 is nowhere near over. As the virus pushes at us, we must push back," he insisted. He told a news conference that as transmission increases, governments must also deploy tried-and-tested measures like mask-wearing and improving ventilation. "Sub-variants of Omicron, like BA.4 and BA.5, continue to drive waves of cases, hospitalisation, and death around the world," Tedros said. "Surveillance has reduced significantly — including testing and sequencing — making it increasingly difficult to assess the impact of variants on transmission, disease characte...

First-ever colored images of universe unveiled

Image
US President Joe Biden has unveiled the first full-colour image of the cosmos taken by the James Webb Space Telescope, offering what NASA said was “the deepest, sharpest infrared view of the universe” ever taken. During a ceremony at the White House on Monday evening, Biden said it was “an historic day” as the world’s largest and most powerful space science telescope offered a “new window into the history of our universe”. “Today we’re going to get a glimpse at the first light to shine through that window,” Biden said shortly before the release of the image, which showed bright white, yellow and orange lights that NASA said represented “galaxies once invisible to us”. “Light from other worlds, orbiting stars far beyond our own,” Biden said. “The oldest-documented light in the history of the universe from over 13 billion – let me say that again – 13 billion years ago.” The image will be followed on Tuesday by the release of four more galactic beauty shots from the telescope’s init...

First full-colour images from James Webb to go on display

Image
Drawing back the curtain to a photo gallery unlike any other, NASA will soon present the first full-colour images from its James Webb Space Telescope, a revolutionary apparatus designed to peer through the cosmos to the dawn of the universe. The highly anticipated July 12 unveiling of pictures and spectroscopic data from the newly operational observatory follows a six-month process of remotely unfurling various components, aligning its mirrors and calibrating instruments. With Webb now finely tuned and fully focused, astronomers will embark on a competitively selected list of science projects exploring the evolution of galaxies, the life cycles of stars, the atmospheres of distant exoplanets and the moons of our outer solar system. The first batch of photos, which have taken weeks to process from raw telescope data, are expected to offer a compelling glimpse at what Webb will capture on the science missions that lie ahead. NASA on Friday posted a list of the five celestial subjec...

Twitter challenges Indian orders to block content: reports

Image
Twitter is challenging the Indian government’s orders to block content on its social media site in court, local media reported Wednesday citing legal documents. The suit is the latest showdown between Twitter and Indian authorities, which have been accused of muzzling criticism both on and offline. In the case filed with a court in Bangalore, the social media giant alleged that the basis on which multiple accounts and content flagged by the government was either "overbroad and arbitrary" and "disproportionate", the Indian Express daily reported. The social media giant submitted to the Karnataka state high court that the ministry had failed to prove how some of the content it wanted taken down violated IT rules, the newspaper quoted sources as saying. Last week Twitter confirmed that India had directed it to locally censor accounts and dozens of posts, including some talking about declining internet freedom in the world's biggest democracy. Who were Europe's earliest humans? Ancient jawbone might have an answer

Image
Archaeologists in Spain said on Friday they had dug up an ancient jawbone that could help them look into the face of some of the earliest human ancestors in Europe. The surprise find, which could be about 1.4 million years old, could also give vital clues to the evolution of the human face over the millennia, the team from the Atapuerca Foundation said. "The first week of July 2022 will enter the history of human evolution," the team added in a statement. The fossilised fragment of an upper jaw and cheekbone was found near caves in the Atapuerca Mountains in northern Spain's Burgos province, the site of other ancient remains. The scientists said they were still working on identifying the specific kind of human ancestor and determining the bone's age. "We have to continue our research for about at least a year. [...] This takes lots of time," José María Bermúdez de Castro, one of the team's coordinators, told journalists. "What we can say is ...

One of world's oldest elephant passes away at 65

Image
Believed to be one of the oldest elephants in the world, Tricia passed away at the age of 65 at Perth Zoo, Australia. Daily Mail reported that the Asian elephant attracted hundreds of tourists for the past 60 years. Premier Mark McGowan called Tricia an "icon" of Western Australia. She arrived at the Zoo in 1963 from Vietnam. Loved for her loving and goofy nature, Tricia captured the hearts of all who came to see her. "Tonight, Western Australia farewells an icon... For many WA families, including my own, Tricia was a household name," said McGowan. He added that the elephant's "stature and grace were compelling". While Tricia was taken good care of and monitored closely, those close to her noticed her lack of sleep and difficulties in movement. They realised her health was deteriorating. Senior elephant keeper at Perth Zoo, Steve Edmunds said that it was an "honour to have known Tricia". A fund with the name of Tricia Tribute to Cons...

Penguins refuse to eat cheap fish

Image
Picky penguins and ornery otters at a Japanese aquarium are facing the effects of inflation, refusing the new bargain bites their keepers are now offering after a jump in prices. As part of a belt-tightening effort, the Hakone-en aquarium in central Japan's Kanagawa region has scrapped some of its traditional and more expensive horse mackerel in favour of cheaper mackerel. But the menu change has not been received with universal approval, with some penguins resolutely turning their beaks up when the mackerel is proffered. "They take it into their mouths at first, but then they decide they don't like it and drop it." He speculates that the uncompromising penguins may have taken issue with the size of their new meals, which are bigger than their standard fare. "They sense something is off," he said. The problem is even more acute among the aquarium's otters, who have uniformly rejected the cheaper fish, Shimamoto added. The facility said it made t...

SpaceX's Starlink internet approved for use with ships, boats, planes

The US Federal Communications Commission on Thursday authorised Elon Musk's SpaceX to use its Starlink satellite internet network with moving vehicles, green-lighting the company's plan to expand broadband offerings to commercial airlines, shipping vessels and trucks. Starlink, a fast-growing constellation of internet-beaming satellites in orbit, has long sought to grow its customer base from individual broadband users in rural, internet-poor locations to enterprise customers in the potentially lucrative automotive, shipping and airline sectors. "Authorizing a new class of terminals for SpaceX's satellite system will expand the range of broadband capabilities to meet the growing user demands that now require connectivity while on the move," the FCC said in its authorization published Thursday, echoing plans outlined in SpaceX's request for the approval early last year. SpaceX has steadily launched some 2,700 Starlink satellites to low-Earth orbit since 20...

Mysterious rocket crashes into moon

New images taken by NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter showed a mysterious rocket crashed into the far side of the moon, leaving behind it a double crater. NASA shared in a press release that the collision caused two overlapping impact sites. One crater measures 59 feet and another 52.5 feet. Astronomers were already expecting an impact after they discovered an unidentified space object on a collision course with the moon. However, they were not expecting a double crater. "No other rocket body impacts on the moon created double craters," the space agency said in the press release. NASA said that the double crater can be caused by a rocket that has large masses on both its ends. However, "a spent rocket has mass concentrated at the motor end; the rest of the rocket stage mainly consists of an empty fuel tank," explained NASA. The agency believes, however, that the mass on both ends of the rocket may help them identify its origin. The astronomer who firs...
