WHO says ‘will do everything’ to discover origin of Covid-19

Image
The World Health Organization insisted Monday it would do everything possible to find the animal origins of Covid-19. “We want to know the origin and we will do everything to know the origin,” WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus told reporters, urging critics who have accused the agency of handing the reins of the probe to China to stop “politicising” the issue. The World Health Organization chief also voiced deep concern over a sharp increase in Covid-19 cases and deaths in Brazil in recent weeks. “I think Brazil has to be very, very serious,” WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus told reporters, after fresh cases in the country jumped from around 10,000 per day in early November to more than 50,000, and as the daily death rate shot up nearly ninefold in a week. http://images.google.sc/url?q=https%3A%2F%2Ftipssinurdu.blogspot.com%2F http://maps.google.ad/url?q=https%3A%2F%2Ftipssinurdu.blogspot.com%2F http://images.google.ad/url?q=https%3A%2F%2Ftipssinurdu.blogspot.com%2F ht...

Will COVID-19 vaccines protect us? Does efficacy equal effectiveness?

Image
The frontrunners in the COVID-19 vaccine race have emerged with different success rates for their shots in clinical trials, but what does that mean for the global fight against the pandemic? U.S. drugmakers Pfizer-BioNtech and Moderna have each said their coronavirus vaccines have an efficacy rate of around 95% and a Russian project touted 92% efficacy for its Sputnik V vaccine. Britain’s AstraZeneca announced an average efficacy rate of 70%, still well above the 50% rate that U.S. regulators have said they want to see before approving a COVID-19 vaccine for use. WHAT ARE EFFICACY NUMBERS? If a vaccine has an efficacy of, say, 80%, it means that if 100 people who have not previously been infected by the coronavirus are given the vaccine, on average 80 of them will not get the disease that the virus causes: COVID-19. These rates relate to vaccines administered and monitored in controlled circumstances, such as clinical trials. DOES THAT MEAN AN INDIVIDUAL’S PROTECTION LEVEL IS TH...

Pakistanis join final trials for China-made coronavirus vaccine

Image
Scores of volunteers from across Pakistan are flocking to research hospitals to join the final-stage clinical trials of a Chinese-made vaccine for coronavirus. It is the first time Pakistan has participated in such a trial, which comes amid a string of positive vaccine announcements by Western pharmaceutical companies this month. The vaccine is being developed by CanSinoBio and the Beijing Institute of Biotechnology China. "I have volunteered myself for a noble cause that will help humanity," said a volunteer at Islamabad's Shifa hospital, where hundreds of participants are being paid about $50 for their trouble. Others should "step forward and take part in this noble cause which will save lives," he added. For years, China has focused much of its attention in Pakistan on mammoth development projects, bankrolling the construction of roads, power plants and a strategic port. Xiaomi’s profit jumps as smartphone shipments surge

Image
Xiaomi on Tuesday reported a 19% jump in third-quarter net profit, beating estimates, as the Chinese smartphone maker’s shipments over the quarter surged by 45.3% on a year earlier. Xiaomi has grabbed market share in China and Europe as its rival Huawei Technologies has faced U.S. sanctions that have hit its supply chain. The company expects it will continue to gain market share after the latest round of U.S. sanctions against Huawei disrupted its supply chains in August.. Xiang Wang, Xiaomi’s president, when asked whether Huawei’s problems had helped Xiaomi, said that the company was “paying attention to what is happening into the market,” but was continuing with its own strategy. Xiaomi’s smartphone revenue rose to 47.6 billion yuan, an increase of 47.5% in the same period, it said in a statement. Overall, quarterly revenue rose to 72.1 billion yuan, up from 53.7 billion yuan. “In Q3 we reached a record high (in revenue), but we only have a market share of 13.5%, so the room f...

Covid 19: Study finds antibodies in 7% of Pakistanis

Image
The second round of a coronavirus prevalence study has confirmed that 7 percent of residents of Pakistan have developed antibodies for the virus. The prevalence study was carried out to determine how many people in Pakistan have developed antibodies after exposure to the virus, said health ministry spokesperson. The second round of study was conducted by the health services academy in collaboration with the World Health Organisation (WHO) in 10 districts of the country. Antibodies are blood proteins produced by the immune system to fight foreign invaders like viruses, and may help to ward off future attacks by those same invaders. According to the results of the study, people who are infected with coronavirus but show no symptoms probably account for most virus transmission. The researchers found that coronavirus rising rapidly in urban areas as compared to rural areas of the country. It is pertinent to mention here that Pakistan recorded fresh 2,954 COVID-19 cases and 48 deaths...

Critics cry foul over govt's sweeping rules to control social media

Image
The federal government's new "Removal and Blocking of Unlawful Online Content (Procedure, Oversight, and Safeguards) Rules, 2020" under the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act, 2016 (PECA) have invited strong criticism from internet service providers, digital rights activities, and tech giants alike. Originally named the "Citizens' Protection (Against Online Harm) Rules, 2020", the rules were devised following a September 2019 Islamabad High Court verdict berating the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) for failing to frame relevant laws under Section 37 of the PECA law. Owing to criticism from digital and human rights activists, civil society, journalists, and strong opposition from the Asia Internet Coalition (AIC), the federal government had initially formed a consultative committee to take all stakeholders on board. On November 2, the IHC had ordered PTA to issue the new rules within 90 days. The government notified the rules on November 18, ...

Cigarette smoke increases cell vulnerability to Coronavirus

Image
Exposure to cigarette smoke makes airway cells more vulnerable to infection with the new coronavirus, UCLA researchers found. They obtained airway-lining cells from five individuals without COVID-19 and exposed some of the cells to cigarette smoke in test tubes. Then they exposed all the cells to the coronavirus. Compared to cells not exposed to the smoke, smoke-exposed cells were two- or even three-times more likely to become infected with the virus, the researchers reported on Tuesday in Cell Stem Cell. Analysis of individual airway cells showed the cigarette smoke reduced the immune response to the virus. “If you think of the airways like the high walls that protect a castle, smoking cigarettes is like creating holes in these walls,” coauthor Brigitte Gomperts told Reuters. “Smoking reduces the natural defenses and this allows the virus to enter and take over the cells. http://cse.google.ws/url?q=https%3A%2F%2Ftipssinurdu.blogspot.com%2F http://images.google.ws/url?q=https...

WHO welcomes COVID-19 immunity study, gives hopes for vaccines

Image
A British study that found people who have had COVID-19 are unlikely to contract the disease again for at least six months is good news and also provides hope for vaccines, a World Health Organization (WHO) senior official said on Friday. “This is really good news to see that we are seeing sustained levels of immune response in humans so far,” Mike Ryan, WHO’s top emergency expert, told a news conference. “It also gives us hope on the vaccine side.” Maria van Kerkhove, WHO’s technical lead on COVID-19, said: “We still need to follow these individuals for a longer period of time to see how long immunity lasts.” Isolated cases of re-infection with COVID-19, the disease caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus, had raised concerns that immunity might be short-lived and that recovered patients may swiftly fall sick again. But the results of this recent study, carried out in a cohort of UK healthcare workers – who are among those at highest risk of contracting COVID-19 – suggest cases of reinfe...

Stakeholders up in arms as social media rules notified

Image
The Ministry of Information Technology on Wednesday notified social media rules that all other stakeholders, including internet service providers as well as digital rights activists, have rejected, terming them draconian and violation of cyber laws of the country. The rules titled, “Removal and Blocking of Unlawful Online Content (Procedure, Oversight and Safeguards) Rules 2020,” have been framed under the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act 2016 (PECA). The RBUOC rules have placed all the internet service providers (ISPs) on a par with social media companies and all the requirements of the social media platforms have been applied to the ISPs as well. While there are several clauses that were the need of time as many social media platforms were ignoring the norms of society, the service providers have expressed concerns over the stringent requirements in the rules. The Internet Service Providers of Pakistan (ISPAK) has rejected the new rules and the association is likely to move ...

Image
American pharmaceutical company Pfizer announced on Wednesday that its COVID-19 vaccine has demonstrated 95 % efficacy in late trials. The company also said that it wants the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to approve the vaccine on an emergency basis. The company had previously produced a vaccine which was 90% effective. The statement added that the efficacy of the vaccine was found to be consistent across age, gender, race, and ethnicity demographics. Johnson & Johnson fails to overturn $2.12 billion baby powder verdict

Image
Missouri’s highest court on Tuesday refused to consider Johnson & Johnson’s appeal of a $2.12 billion damages award to women who blamed their ovarian cancer on asbestos in its baby powder and other talc products. The Missouri Supreme Court let stand a June 23 decision by a state appeals court, which upheld a jury’s July 2018 finding of liability but reduced J&J’s payout from $4.69 billion after dismissing claims by some of the 22 plaintiffs. Johnson & Johnson said it plans to appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court. It said the verdict was the product of a “fundamentally flawed trial, grounded in a faulty presentation of the facts,” and was “at odds with decades of independent scientific evaluations confirming Johnson’s Baby Powder is safe, does not contain asbestos and does not cause cancer.” The New Brunswick, New Jersey-based company also said it will set aside a $2.1 billion reserve for the verdict, to be reflected in its year-end financial results. Kevin Parker, a lawy...
