Russia's Nauka science module docks with ISS

Image
Russia said it successfully docked the Nauka laboratory module with the International Space Station on Thursday -- though the troubled unit caused yet another fright after accidentally firing and briefly throwing the entire station out of position. The mission comes after more than a decade of delays and as Russia seeks to boost its space industry, which has fallen behind since the collapse of the Soviet Union and struggles to keep up with competition from the United States. A few hours after docking, Nauka's propulsive devices unexpectedly fired, forcing personnel aboard the multinational manned orbital platform to fire thrusters on the Russian segment of the station to counter the effect. The module started firing "inadvertently and unexpectedly, moving the station 45 degrees out of attitude," NASA said on Twitter. "Recovery operations have regained attitude and the crew is in no danger," it added. In a press call, NASA's human spaceflight program ch...

WhatsApp has begun rolling out its new calling interface to iPhone users

Image
WhatsApp has begun rolling out its new calling interface to iPhone users, enabling the users to add more people to a group call besides also introducing a new setting for the archived messages. The Facebook-owned app has previously tested these changes for a brief period with beta users and these changes are already available for users who have the beta version of the WhatsApp app installed. The new calling screen looks quite similar to FaceTime which shows everyone who’s on the call. From there, users can invite other people to join the connection and even call a person again if they were unable to accept it. The app further shared in its release notes for version 2.21.140 that when can anyone join group calls, saying that if you temporarily ignore to participate in a group call, and you open WhatsApp again after some time, if the group call is still ongoing, the app might present you an alert if you want to quickly join the call, without asking other participants to add you agai...

WHO reassures pharma companies on Covid vaccines patent

Image
The World Health Organization on Wednesday sought to reassure pharmaceutical companies that a proposal to suspend patent rights on Covid-19 vaccines was not a bid to "snatch" their intellectual property rights. With more than four million dead and the toll likely to reach much higher, WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said vaccine makers should be offered incentives in return for temporarily waiving their rights. "Of course, we can´t snatch your property," Tedros said via video link from Tokyo at the start of a meeting with the World Trade Organization, pharma companies and global financial institutions. "With so many lives on the line, profits and patents must come second," he said, without giving any details on the proposed financial incentives. Waiving intellectual property rights would help meet the 11 billion doses of vaccine the WHO says are needed to protect 70 percent of people in every country by mid-2022. This is the second m...

SHC LIFTS BAN ON VIDEO-SHARING APP TIKTOK

Image
The Sindh High Court (SHC) on Friday recalled its order placing a ban on the popular short-form video sharing application TikTok. A bench of the high court directed the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) to unblock the app across the country. The telecommunication regulator moved a plea requesting the court to withdraw its order that called for a ban to be placed on the video-sharing app. The court directed the PTA to decide the petitioner’s complaint against the app until July 5. On June 28, the Sindh High Court (SHC) had ordered the authorities concerned to impose a ban on the video streaming app, nearly three months after the country had lifted a ban imposed on it. This was the third time that the video-sharing platform was banned in the country. The court gave the order on a petition filed by a citizen who lamented that he approached the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) to have immoral content removed from the app however, the PTA did not do anything in thi...
