Microsoft warns thousands of cloud customers of exposed databases

Image
Microsoft has warned thousands of its cloud computing customers, including some of the world's largest companies, that intruders could have the ability to read, change or even delete their main databases, according to a copy of the email and a cyber security researcher. The vulnerability is in Microsoft Azure's flagship Cosmos DB database. A research team at security company Wiz discovered it was able to access keys that control access to databases held by thousands of companies. Wiz Chief Technology Officer Ami Luttwak is a former chief technology officer at Microsoft's Cloud Security Group. Because Microsoft cannot change those keys by itself, it emailed the customers on Thursday telling them to create new ones. Microsoft agreed to pay Wiz $40,000 for finding the flaw and reporting it, according to an email it sent to Wiz. "We fixed this issue immediately to keep our customers safe and protected. We thank the security researchers for working under coordinated vu...

Federal govt prohibits employees from using social media platforms

Image
In an attempt to prevent leaks of government information and documents, the federal government has decided to restrict its employees from using social media platforms. A notification issued by the Establishment Division states that no government employee will be allowed to use any social media application — including Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp and Twitter — without seeking permission from the government. The reasoning behind the step is to "prevent the disclosure of government information and documents". The statement further directed the government employees to abide by Government Servants Rules 1964 under which government employees are barred from expressing their opinions or making any statements. Government employees have been warned of "strict action" for violating any of the instructions.   admin.web@suchtv.pk (Web Desk) from Science & Technology - SUCH TV https://ift.tt/3yxqJZe https://ift.tt/3mJtmF0

Image
The World Health Organisation warned on Tuesday that it has enough medical supplies to last it “one week”, following the blistering Taliban takeover of Afghanistan's capital Kabul 10 days ago. “WHO now only has enough supplies in-country to last for one week,” said Ahmed al-Mandhari, the head of WHO's Eastern Mediterranean region — stretching from Morocco to Afghanistan. “Yesterday, 70 per cent of these supplies were released to health facilities,” he added. Mandhari said that 500 metric tonnes of medicines and supplies stored in Dubai were unable to be delivered due to the chaotic evacuation efforts at Kabul airport which does not have the capacity to receive commercial flights. “Countries sending in empty planes to pick up evacuees do not feel they are able to help,” Mandhari said. Facebook rolls out end-to-end encryption for Messenger voice, video calls

Image
Facebook Inc (FB.O) on Friday rolled out end-to-end encryption for voice and video calls on Messenger, adding another layer of privacy to its widely used communications platform. Facebook's WhatsApp and Messenger services already have end-to-end encryption on personal texts messages sent by users. These features have gained popularity in the past year as people sought to stay in touch virtually during the coronavirus pandemic. "We'll also kick off a limited test with adults in certain countries that lets them opt-in to end-to-end encrypted messages and calls for one-on-one conversations on Instagram," Facebook said in a blogpost, adding that the security feature will also be tested in the coming weeks on Messenger's group chats. admin.web@suchtv.pk (Web Desk) from Science & Technology - SUCH TV https://ift.tt/3COsfcv https://ift.tt/3jPLx...

TikTok rolls out privacy updates for teenaged users

Image
TikTok became the latest tech company Thursday to announce tighter protections for teenagers as social media platforms come under increased scrutiny over their privacy safeguards. The short video-sharing app will roll out a number of features in the coming months, including a default curb for 16 and 17-year-olds on in-app messaging unless it is switched to a different setting. Under 16s will see a pop-up message when they publish their first video, asking them to choose who can watch. And users aged 16 and 17 will be able to receive a pop-up asking them to confirm who can download their videos. Downloads are already disabled on content posted by under 16s. The Chinese-owned platform will also stop sending push notifications to users aged 13 to 16 from 9pm -- and an hour later for 16 to 17-year-olds -- with the aim of reducing their screen time at night. The moves announced by head of child safety public policy Alexandra Evans and global head of privacy Aruna Sharma build on prev...

Pfizer, Moderna seen making billions from COVID-19 vaccine boosters

Image
Drugmakers Pfizer Inc, BioNTech, and Moderna Inc are expected to make billions of dollars from COVID-19 booster shots in a market that could rival the $6 billion in annual sales for flu vaccines for years to come, analysts and healthcare investors say. For several months, the companies have said they expect that fully inoculated people will need an extra dose of their vaccines to maintain protection over time and to fend off new coronavirus variants. Now a growing list of governments, including Chile, Germany and Israel, have decided to offer booster doses to older citizens or people with weak immune systems in the face of the fast-spreading Delta variant. Late on Thursday, the US Food and Drug Administration authorised a booster dose of vaccines from Pfizer Inc and Moderna Inc for people with compromised immune systems. Pfizer, along with its German partner BioNTech, and Moderna have together locked up over $60 billion in sales of the shots just in 2021 and 2022. The agreements ...

WHO to test three anti-inflamatory drugs as treatment for COVID-19

Image
A clinical trial in 52 countries would study three anti-inflammatory drugs as potential treatments for COVID-19 patients, said the World Health Organisation (WHO) on Wednesday. "These therapies — artesunate, imatinib and infliximab — were selected by an independent expert panel for their potential in reducing the risk of death in hospitalised COVID-19 patients," it said in a statement on the Solidarity PLUS trial. Artesunate is already used for severe malaria, imatinib for certain cancers, and infliximab for diseases of the immune system such as Crohn's Disease and rheumatoid arthritis. The original Solidarity trial last year found that all four treatments evaluated — remdesivir, hydroxychloroquine, lopinavir/ritonavir and interferon — had little or no effect in helping COVID patients. So far, only corticosteroids have been proven effective against severe and critical COVID-19. The WHO said artesunate, produced by Ipca, is used to treat malaria. In the trial, it will be...

You can get the second dose of the Covid vaccine anytime after the minimum time interval has passed, said Monday Prime Minister’s aide on national health Dr Faisal Sultan. Special Assistant to the Prime Minister (SAPM) on National Health Services tweeted earlier today that the masses don’t need a reminder and schedule and they can get their vaccinations by just walking into the centers once the minimum time has elapsed. Early signs Covid-19 vaccines may not stop Delta transmission, England says

Image
There are early signs that people who have been vaccinated against Covid-19 may be able to transmit the Delta variant of the virus as easily as those who have not, scientists at Public Health England (PHE) said on Friday. The findings chime with those from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which last week raised concerns that vaccinated people infected with Delta could, unlike with other variants, readily transmit it. The highly infectious Delta variant has become the dominant coronavirus type globally, sustaining a pandemic that has already killed more than 4.4 million people. Vaccines have been shown to provide good protection against severe disease and death from Delta, especially with two doses, but there is less data on whether vaccinated people can still transmit it to others. "Some initial findings ... indicate that levels of virus in those who become infected with Delta having already been vaccinated may be similar to levels found in unvaccinated peo...

Google unveiled on Monday a flagship Pixel smart phone powered by its first mobile chip to put artificial intelligence in buyers’ hands. Pixel 6 models set for release later this year, with superfast 5G wireless capability, will debut Google’s own Tensor chip crafted along the lines of processors it made for data centres to enable computers to think more like people do. “It’s basically a mobile system on a chip designed around artificial intelligence,” Google devices senior vice president Rick Osterloh said during a briefing at the company’s headquarters in Silicon Valley. “We’re really excited about it. We’re setting the stage to really grow the business.” Google’s Pixel line has captured scant share in a global smart phone market dominated by Samsung, Apple and Chinese manufacturers. Pixel phones have been seen as a way for Google to showcase the capabilities of its free Android mobile operating system, setting a standard for other smart phone makers. “We’ve always thoug...
