BMW aims for 20% of its vehicles to be electric by 2023

Image
German luxury carmaker BMW is planning to step up its production of electric vehicles, Chief Executive Oliver Zipse told German daily Augsburger Allgemeine. “We are significantly increasing the number of electric vehicles. Between 2021 and 2023, we will build a quarter of a million more electric cars than originally planned”, Zipse told the newspaper’s Monday edition according to a pre-released version. BMW wants roughly every fifth car it sells to be powered by an electric engine by 2023, Zipse said, compared to about 8% this year. The manager also reiterated his call to speed up the expansion of charging infrastructure. “15,000 private and about 1,300 public charging points would have to be put into operation every week as of today. Unfortunately, we are a long way from that”, he told the paper. http://maps.google.bf/url?q=https%3A%2F%2Ftipssinurdu.blogspot.com%2F http://maps.google.com.vc/url?q=https%3A%2F%2Ftipssinurdu.blogspot.com%2F http://images.google.com.vc/url?q=http...

Michael Jackson's Neverland Ranch sold for knockdown price

Image
Michael Jackson’s famed Neverland Ranch in California has finally sold, more than 10 years after the death of the pop star. Billionaire investor Ron Burkle, a former family friend of Jackson, recently bought the sprawling 2,700 acre (1,100 hectare) estate, his spokesman said on Thursday. The Wall Street Journal said the estate, which was renamed Sycamore Valley Ranch several years ago, sold for $22 million according to public records. In 2015, the asking price was $100 million and in 2017 it was re-listed for $67 million. Burkle’s spokesman said the businessman saw the investment as a land banking opportunity. He spotted the estate from the air while looking at another location and contacted Tom Barrack, the founder of real estate investment company Colony Capital LLC, to seal the sale. The ranch was off the market at the time. Jackson, who died from an overdose of the anesthetic Propofol in 2009 at age 50, bought the property in Los Olivos, about 120 miles (193 km) north of Los ...

Pakistan govt liaising with coronavirus vaccine manufacturers, NCOC told

Image
The federal government has informed the National Command and Operations Centre (NCOC) that it is liaising with leading manufacturers of the novel coronavirus vaccines including those from China. The officials said they are regularly reviewing developments including data from phase three of the COVID-19 vaccine trials. The final decision about the availability of the vaccine for Pakistan would be determined through these steps. Coronavirus vaccines It may be noted here that Pakistan signed up for the United Nation's COVAX Facility, a global initiative aimed at equitable access to safe and effective COVID-19 vaccines worldwide. There are also multiple local and China-made vaccine trials being conducting across the country. The human trials of a vaccine being developed by Chinese Company CanSino Biologics Inc started on September 22 and has over 13,000 volunteers across Pakistan. In November, Federal Minister for Planning and Development and the NCOC chief Asad Umar said that t...

China launches first phase of plan to make reusable rockets

Image
China’s new carrier rocket, the Long March-8, made its maiden flight on Tuesday, the country’s space agency said, the first phase of a strategy to deploy launch vehicles that can be reused. The Long March-8 series is part of China’s endeavours to develop reusable rockets, potentially lowering mission costs and paving the way towards commercial launch services. The programme has drawn parallels to private US rocket firm SpaceX’s Falcon range, although China said in 2018 its reusable carrier vehicle would use different technologies. The new medium-lift carrier rocket sent five satellites into planned orbit, blasting off from the Wenchang launch site on the southern Hainan island at 12:37pm Beijing time on Tuesday. It measures 50.3 metres and has a take-off mass of 356 tonnes, and the China National Space Administration (CNSA) said it is of “great significance for accelerating the upgrading of launch vehicles”. The rocket’s design was based on technologies developed for previous Long...

WhatsApp web: Voice and video calls to roll out next year

Image
WhatsApp will introduce voice and video calling feature to the messaging app's desktop version next year, a company spokesperson told Reuters. The move to facilitate calls over large screens would put WhatsApp on par with video-conferencing bigwigs Zoom and Google Meet, but it is unclear if it has ambitions to compete with the two in the enterprise space. With over 2 billion users globally, WhatsApp is second only to its parent firm Facebook Inc's namesake app, yet it is largely used for personal calls, unlike Zoom or Google Meet. WhatsApp said it has already rolled out the feature to some desktop users on a trial basis in time for the holiday season, a move first reported by tech blog WABetaInfo. A second wave of the coronavirus has forced many people around the world to stay home and plan gatherings with friends and family over the internet instead. Last week, Zoom Video Communications said that it was removing the 40-minute time limit for its free accounts on all meet...

BioNTech says can make vaccine for new coronavirus variant detected in UK within 6 weeks

Image
The co-founder of BioNTech said Tuesday it was “highly likely” that its vaccine against the coronavirus works against the mutated strain detected in Britain, but it could also adapt the vaccine if necessary in six weeks. “Scientifically, it is highly likely that the immune response by this vaccine also can deal with the new virus variant,” said Ugur Sahin. But if needed, “in principle the beauty of the messenger technology is that we can directly start to engineer a vaccine which completely mimics this new mutation — we could be able to provide a new vaccine technically within six weeks.” Sahin said the variant detected in Britain has nine mutations, rather than just one as is usually common. Nevertheless, he voiced confidence that the vaccine developed with Pfizer would be efficient because it “contains more than 1,000 amino acids, and only nine of them have changed, so that means 99 percent of the protein is still the same”. He said tests are being run on the variant, with res...

Apple targets car production by 2024

Image
Apple is moving forward with self-driving car technology and is targeting 2024 to produce a passenger vehicle that could include its own breakthrough battery technology, people familiar with the matter told Reuters. The iPhone maker’s automotive efforts, known as Project Titan, have proceeded unevenly since 2014 when it first started to design its own vehicle from scratch. At one point, Apple drew back the effort to focus on software and reassessed its goals. Doug Field, an Apple veteran who had worked at Tesla Inc, returned to oversee the project in 2018 and laid off 190 people from the team in 2019. Since then, Apple has progressed enough that it now aims to build a vehicle for consumers, two people familiar with the effort said, asking not to be named because Apple’s plans are not public. Apple’s goal of building a personal vehicle for the mass market contrasts with rivals such as Alphabet Inc’s Waymo, which has built robo-taxis to carry passengers for a driverless ride-hailing ...

Australia confirms two cases of new fast-spreading coronavirus strain

Image
Australia confirmed on Monday it has detected two cases of a fast-spreading new coronavirus strain that has forced Britain to reverse plans to ease curbs over Christmas, the first confirmed cases of the strain in the Asia-Pacific region. Australia’s most populous state on Sunday reported six new cases of the novel coronavirus in people returning from overseas and in quarantine, and authorities said among them were two cases of the fast-spreading new strain. However, New South Wales officials stressed that no people infected with the new strain were believed to be circulating in the community. “We’ve had a couple of UK returned travellers with the particular mutations,” NSW chief health officer Kerry Chant told reporters. Australia, which has since March closed its borders to all non-citizens and permanent residents, said it was not considering suspending flights with Britain. “Everyone coming from the UK is going into 14 days of hotel quarantine and they are of no risk as that q...

Boy in Faisalabad reportedly dies after losing a PUBG game

Image
A young man in Faisalabad lost his life on Monday after he reportedly "failed to win" a game of PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds (PUBG) online, family sources said. According to hospital staff, the young man, who hailed from Jaranwala, was shifted to the hospital yesterday in an unconscious state. The family said that the young man had been playing the online game for the last six months. Losing the last stage of the game last night had a profound effect on the young man's mind, they added. The exact cause of death, however, was not explained. PUBG Pakistan, a popular online game officially known as PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds, was previously banned in Pakistan on a temporary basis after reports emerged that it had negative effects on the minds of the youth. Earlier in July, a 22-year-old man in Quetta had committed suicide after missing a task in PUBG. The young boy was already depressed because of a love affair, and missing a task in the online game made th...

CDC issues guidelines on COVID-19 vaccination after allergic reactions

Image
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on Saturday said it was monitoring reports of allergic reactions to the COVID-19 vaccination and made recommendations on how people with histories of allergies should proceed. Anyone who had a severe reaction to a COVID-19 vaccine should not get the second dose, the agency said, defining severe as needing the medication epinephrine or treatment in a hospital. People who have had a severe allergic reaction to any ingredient in a COVID-19 vaccine should avoid the vaccine formulation containing the ingredient, CDC said. Two vaccines have been approved in the United States under emergency use authorizations. Individuals with histories of severe allergic reaction to vaccines should consult their doctors about the COVID-19 shot. The CDC said people with severe allergies to food, pets, latex or environmental conditions as well as people with allergies to oral medication or a family history of severe allergic reactions could still ...
