Hospitalized kids with COVID-19 are being affected by Neurologic issues

Image
Most children and adolescents are spared from severe COVID-19, but among those who do require hospitalization, temporary neurologic effects are common, researchers found. In their study of 1,695 patients age 21 or younger hospitalized for COVID-19 or a COVID-19-related illness known as multisystem inflammatory syndrome, 365 – or 22% – had neurologic complications, including 43 (12%) with life-threatening neurologic disorders such as strokes and central nervous system infections. Other neurologic effects included seizures, headache, weakness, loss of smell and taste, and altered awareness or confusion. Neurologic involvement in most patients was transient and resolved by the time they left the hospital, according to a report published on Friday in JAMA Neurology. Because they only studied hospitalized children, the range and rate of such complications may be an underestimate of the actual issue, the authors said. They said more research is needed both to determine the true inciden...

Researchers make focal points with gold particles to fix visual weakness

Image
Imagine seeing the world in muted shades — gray sky, gray grass. Some people with color blindness see everything this way, though most can’t see specific colors. Tinted glasses can help, but they can’t be used to correct blurry vision. And dyed contact lenses currently in development for the condition are potentially harmful and unstable. Now, at Abu Dhabi’s Khalifa University, researchers report infusing contact lenses with gold nanoparticles to create a safer way to see colors. In colour blindness, the most common kind is protanopia and deuteranopia — difficulty separating red and green colours. Usually, for remedying this, people wear special glasses which have a tinted glass that enables them to see the specific colour that they can’t otherwise see but not only are these lenses really bulky, but they cannot be used for correcting other vision problems simultaneously. Moreover, researchers in the past have also worked on developing lenses to help bridge the gap between the two...

Twitter about to announce 'undo send' feature for paying users

Image
Twitter Inc is testing an “undo send” function that would give users a short time to withdraw a tweet before it is posted, the company confirmed App researcher Jane Manchun Wong, who discovers unannounced social media features by looking at the sites’ code, tweeted an animation showing a tweet with a spelling error where an ‘undo’ button was available before a short timer ran out. A Twitter spokeswoman said the feature was being tested as part of the company’s exploration of how subscriptions could work on the platform. She said Twitter would be testing and iterating possible paid-for features over time. Twitter has said it is working on paid subscription models, which would reduce its dependence on ad revenue, including a “super follow” feature to let users charge their followers for access to exclusive content which will launch this year. CEO Jack Dorsey has previously said the site would likely never have an “edit button,” a feature users have long sought. But Twitter has bee...

Researchers find first space tropical storm above Earth

Image
Hurricanes are a common occurrence on Earth, they wreak havoc across oceans seasonally, and now they may cause chaos in the skies too. Scientists have discovered the first space hurricane in Earth’s upper atmosphere. Hurricanes have been spotted in the lower atmosphere of planets, including Mars and Saturn and Jupiter, swirling masses have even been spotted on the sun, but this is the first time scientists have seen a hurricane in the upper atmosphere of a planet. According to data from 2014 that has been analysed over the years and results available only now, scientists have discovered a phenomenon in the Earth’s upper atmosphere that’s called a space hurricane. This space hurricane, according to a report in The Hill, is a swirling masses of plasma that rains electrons, rather than water. The hurricane occurred in August 2014, but the observations made by satellites were only recently uncovered. Scientists suspect such hurricanes are more common both in Earth’s solar system and ...

Personal protective equipment make wearers sick

Image
Personal protective equipment (PPE) required in operating rooms and intensive care units can make wearers sick, a small study confirms. The findings help explain reports by clinicians of difficulty breathing, headache, and mental impairment while wearing the full protective suit that includes high quality mask, face shield and gloves, researchers said. Among the eight surgeons who volunteered for the study, PPE impaired breathing, resulting in high blood levels of carbon dioxide and low levels of oxygen. “Air re-breathed within the PPE mask after two hours was found to contain almost 8% carbon dioxide – 260-fold more than atmospheric levels (0.03%),” said Dr. Wyn Lewis of University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff. The changes were significantly greater than those seen with standard operating room garments, his team reported on Saturday in the British Journal of Surgery, and can cause fluctuations in brain blood flow, shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, nausea, mental impairme...

More than 1,000 shots of coronavirus vaccine went to waste in Japan after storage temperatures deviated from a required range due to a freezer malfunction, the health ministry said on Monday, the country’s first such case of wasted vaccines. A medical institution reported that the freezer malfunction had occurred over the weekend, rendering 172 vials of the vaccine, or 1,032 doses, useless, the ministry said. It declined to identify the name of the medical institution or the manufacturer of the freezer in question, but said the freezer maker would start looking into the cause of the malfunction. from He...
