Amazon's Alexa is digitally raising the dead

"I am haunted." This is one of the several reactions on social media to Amazon.com Inc's Alexa digital assistant impersonating a grandmother reading an excerpt from "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz." During a company presentation on Wednesday, Alexa chief scientist Rohit Prasad attempted to demonstrate the digital assistant's humanlike demeanour, Bloomberg reported. Prasad stated that he was surprised by the companionable relationship users developed with Alexa and wanted to investigate this further. Human characteristics such as "empathy and affect" are essential for establishing trust with others, he said. In the ongoing pandemic, when so many of us have lost someone we love, while AI cannot take away the pain of loss, it can certainly make their memories last, he said. According to the presentation, Amazon is pitching the service as a tool for digitally raising the dead. In a subsequent interview on the sidelines of Amazon's re: MARS technol...

Netflix lays off 300 more employees

Image
Streaming giant Netflix has fired more than 300 employees, or 4pc of its workforce, after the company saw a decline in the number of subscribers. Previously Netflix had cut 150 jobs in the month of April after losing a significant number of subscribers for the first time in a while. The jobs cuts are in different departments, however, most of the employees belong to the US. Addressing the issue, a Netflix spokesperson said, “While we continue to invest significantly in the business, we made these adjustments so that our costs are growing in line with our slower revenue growth. We are so grateful for everything they have done for Netflix and are working hard to support them through this difficult transition.” The platform lost 200,000 subscribers earlier this year and expects a further decrease of two million by July. The platform is looking at different options to increase its growth. It is currently reaching out to companies to explore the ad services to earn revenue. At a conf...

Monkeypox is not yet a health emergency: WHO

Image
Monkeypox is not yet a global health emergency, the World Health Organisation (WHO) has ruled , although WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said he was deeply concerned about the outbreak. "I am deeply concerned about the monkeypox outbreak, this is clearly an evolving health threat that my colleagues and I in the WHO Secretariat are following extremely closely," Tedros said in a statement issued on Saturday. WHO said in a separate statement that although there were some differing views within the committee, they ultimately agreed by consensus that at this stage the outbreak is not a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC). The "global emergency" label currently only applies to the coronavirus pandemic and ongoing efforts to eradicate polio, and the UN agency has stepped back from applying it to the monkeypox outbreak after advice from a meeting of international experts. There have been more than 3,200 confirmed cases of monkeypox...

Ancient pregnant tortoise surprises archaeologists

Image
The remains of a tortoise and its egg have been unearthed by archaeologists in Pompeii, the Roman city buried in a volcanic eruption in 79 AD. The animal was found hidden under the clay floor of a storehouse and probably died before Vesuvius erupted. "It had dug itself a burrow where it could lay its egg, but failed to do, which may have caused its death," said Valeria Amoretti, who works as an anthropologist at the site. The unusual find came to light during excavations of an area that had been devastated by a violent earthquake in 62 AD and was subsequently absorbed into a public bath house. The site was originally an opulent home with refined mosaics and wall paintings, dating back to the 1st century BC, and archaeologists are not sure why the building was not restored but was rather taken over by the Stabian baths. "Both the presence of the tortoise in the city and the abandonment of the sumptuous domus... illustrate the extent of the transformations after the...

Google to pay for Wikipedia content

Image
Google has agreed to pay Wikipedia for content displayed by its search engine, mirroring deals the US tech giant has struck with news outlets in Europe. The Wikimedia Foundation, the charity that oversees the online encyclopedia, said Google was the first paying customer for its commercial venture Wikimedia Enterprise, which it launched last year. The Internet Archive, a non-profit that runs a site called the Wayback Machine that saves snapshots of websites and is used to fix Wikipedia links, will be offered the commercial services for free. “We’re thrilled to be working with them both as our longtime partners,” said Wikimedia’s Lane Becker in a statement on Tuesday. Wikipedia, one of the world’s most visited websites, is free to use, updated by volunteers and relies on donations to keep afloat. The new commercial arm will not change that arrangement for individual users, the foundation said. Google uses material from the site for its “knowledge panel” — a sidebar that acco...

Samsung fined $9.7m over false water-resistance claims

Image
Australia's competition regulator said on Thursday a court ordered the local unit of Samsung Electronics to pay a A$14 million ($9.65 million) penalty for nine misleading advertisements about a water-resistance feature in some of its smartphones. Samsung Australia admitted to misleading buyers of some of its 'Galaxy' phones about the water-resistance level, the Australian Competition & Consumer Commission (ACCC) said. The regulator had first sued the company in July 2019. Samsung Australia said in a statement that this was not an issue in its newer, current models. The regulator said between March 2016 and October 2018, the company ran in-store and social media advertisements that claimed the phones could be used in pools or sea water. The ACCC, however, received hundreds of complaints from users saying the smartphones did not function properly or even stopped working entirely after being exposed to water. The claims "promoted an important selling point for ...

Haven’t implemented centralized DNS control: PTA

Image
The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) on Tuesday dismissed news reports carried by a section of media regarding the new Domain Name System (DNS), saying it had not implemented centralised DNS control.  “It is clarified that PTA has only implemented an automation of blocking of unlawful content as mandated to PTA under PECA 37,” a statement issued by the authority read. Domain Name System (DNS) is the hierarchical and decentralised naming system used to identify computers or other devices like mobile phones and tablets reachable through the internet. Contrary to the claims, it said it has not implemented a Centralised DNS Control where-by all resolution will be centrally performed by PTA. Instead, the resolution will be performed at ISP’s end, it added.  “The blocking of illegal content was already being done however to improve the effectiveness of the same, an automation process through domain name resolution at ISP level has been implemented under the policy di...

Elon Musk hints at job cuts at Twitter

Image
Billionaire Elon Musk has hinted at the possibility of layoffs at Twitter depending on the company's current financial situation, reported BBC. In the first virtual meeting with Twitter employees, Musk said that the company is currently not doing well in terms of its costs exceeding revenue. Hence it "needs to get healthy" financially. However, he mentioned that those who have a significant contribution to make, should not be worried. Musk also shared his bias towards working from the office rather than remote work and said the option of working from home should be given to "someone exceptional". Regarding his plans for Twitter, Alex Heath tweeted that Musk believes the platform should "mimic the approach of the super app WeChat in China". He also hinted at the possibility of life beyond the planet and how the platform can be helpful for "civilization and consciousness". Musk had previously threatened to walk away from the bid if Twit...

SpaceX employees denounce CEO Musk as 'distraction': letter

Image
A group of SpaceX employees derided flamboyant billionaire and chief executive Elon Musk as a "distraction and embarrassment" in an internal letter to executives. Musk, also head of electric automaker Tesla Inc, has been in headlines and late-night comedy monologues in recent months for a tumultuous quest to buy social media giant Twitter, a reported allegation of sexual harassment that Musk has denied as well as crude comments online and a foray into political discourse. "Elon's behaviour in the public sphere is a frequent source of distraction and embarrassment for us, particularly in recent weeks," read the letter, which does not single out any controversy in particular. Reuters was provided a copy of the letter. "As our CEO and most prominent spokesperson, Elon is seen as the face of SpaceX — every tweet that Elon sends is a de facto public statement by the company," the letter added. SpaceX did not immediately respond to a request for commen...

Microsoft retires 27-year-old Internet Explorer today

Image
Microsoft has announced the retirement of 27-year-old Internet Explorer as the firm's oldest browser will be completely phased out from June 15. Internet Explorer was launched in 1995 as an add-on package for Windows 95. Microsoft later started providing the app for free as part of the package. The nearly three-decade-old browser peaked at 95 per cent usage share in 2003. However, IE could not maintain its position, and its user base started to decline drastically as other competitors released new browsers with better user interfaces, faster internet speed and smoother performance. Internet Explorer, over time, has devolved into a default browser that is used to install other browsers. "The future of Internet Explorer on Windows 10 lies in Microsoft Edge," said Sean Lyndersay, Microsoft Edge program manager, quoted Mashable. Lyndersay added, "Not only is Microsoft Edge a quicker, more secure, and more contemporary browsing experience than Internet Explorer, bu...

'Air pollution cuts life expectancy by more than 2 years'

Image
Chronic air pollution cuts average global life expectancy by more than two years per person, a study published showed, an impact comparable to that of smoking and far worse than HIV/AIDS or terrorism. More than 97% of the global population lives in areas where air pollution exceeds recommended levels, the University of Chicago's Energy Policy Institute (EPIC) said in its latest Air Quality Life Index, which used satellite data to measure levels of PM2.5, hazardous floating particles that damage the lungs. It said that if global PM2.5 levels were reduced to the five micrograms per cubic metre recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO), average life expectancy would rise by an average of 2.2 years. Air pollution has been neglected as a public health issue, with funding to address the problem still inadequate, the study warned. "Now that our understanding of pollution's impact has improved, there's a stronger case for governments to prioritise it as an urgen...

Thinking digital twin within a decade?

Image
With sophisticated 3D computer models, AI and other sensors that will connect physical things to the network, a digital twin version of a human is possible, with a goal to help and improve the real counterpart. Technology analyst, Rob Enderle, believes that “the first versions of thinking human digital twins” will be ready before the end of the decade. He says, "The emergence of these will need a huge amount of thought and ethical consideration, because a thinking replica of ourselves could be incredibly useful to employers”. Enderle thinks that the ownership of digital twins will become the defining questions of the metaverse era. Human twins, though primitive, have already been developed with VR avatars. Senior research fellow in AI at Oxford University, Professor Sandra Wachter thinks that the appeal of digital twins is “reminiscent of exciting science fiction novels, and at the moment that is the stage where it is at". However, Wachter believes that AI is not a goo...

Self-driving cars may speed up to 130 km an hour

Image
The UN regulation on automated driving is likely to be increased from 60 kilometres (37 miles) an hour to 130 km (80.8 miles) an hour in certain conditions, a United Nations regulatory agency said. The United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) said: “A new milestone in mobility has been reached with the adoption of a proposal to extend automated driving in certain traffic environments from the current limit of 60 km/h to up to 130 km/h.” Speaking at a UN press conference, UNECE spokesman Jean Rodriguez said the recommendation still needs to be adopted formally by the World Forum for Harmonisation of Vehicle Regulations at the end of June. The draft will be submitted to the forum at its June 21-24 session.  “If adopted, it will enter into force in January 2023,” said Rodriguez. The World Forum for Harmonisation of Vehicle Regulations, hosted by UNECE, is the intergovernmental platform responsible for the regulatory frameworks regarding the safety and environmental ...

Meta unfriends FB ticker in final farewell to Facebook era

Image
After a decade of trading as Facebook, the social media giant is shedding the last vestige of its old corporate avatar as it begins trading under the ticker symbol 'META'. Meta Platforms Inc rebranded from its eponymous social networking platform in October 2021, betting that the metaverse, a shared virtual realm, will succeed mobile internet. Mark Zuckerberg, Meta's co-founder and CEO, established Facebook in 2004 from his Harvard dorm as a way for students to meet via the internet. Little did the then 19-year-old student know that Facebook would become integral to many people's social life, with nearly three billion monthly users, and expand to include popular social media apps Instagram and Whatsapp in its universe. Nearly two decades on, his company is pouring billions of dollars into the metaverse, a futuristic idea of virtual environments where users can work, socialize and play, by adding new features to hardware devices that serve as access points. Moderna announces positive results for Omicron vaccine

Image
US biotech company Moderna on Wednesday announced positive results for a new vaccine that targets both the original Covid strain and Omicron, and sees the shot as its "lead candidate" for a booster this fall. The so-called "bivalent" vaccine was tested in a trial of 814 adults and shown to produce 1.75 times more Omicron-specific neutralizing antibodies, which have the power to prevent infection, compared to Moderna's original Spikevax vaccine. All of the participants previously received three doses of Spikevax, and then slightly more than half went on to get a fourth dose of the bivalent shot while the rest got another dose of Spikevax. Antibody levels were tested one month later. The group that got the new shot also received slightly superior protection to the ancestral strain of Covid compared to Spikevax — though original Covid has long since disappeared from circulation. "We are thrilled," said Stephane Bancel, CEO of Moderna in a statement,...

Google to pay $100m for violating data protection act

Image
Google has agreed to pay $100 million to Illinois residents for violating the state’s Biometric Information Protection Act (BIPA) through ‘Face Grouping’ feature. Residents of the state can claim $200 and $400 if they appeared in a picture between May 1st, 2015 and April 25th, 2022. By allegedly collecting and analysing faces without informed consent of the individual, and sharing data retention policies with the public, the company violated privacy concerns. In a report by The Verge, Google defended the feature emphasizing that the collected faces of individuals grouped together automatically were only visible to the user and can be disabled. In 2021, Facebook had to pay $650 million as a settlement for its lawsuit over face-based Tag Suggestions. Musk-Twitter spam accounts spat deepens

Image
Elon Musk threatened Monday to withdraw his bid to buy Twitter, accusing it of failing to provide data on fake accounts, in the latest twist in the Tesla billionaire’s push to acquire the social network. Twitter has committed “a clear material breach” of its “obligations under the merger agreement and Mr Musk reserves ... his right not to consummate the transaction,” according to a document filed with securities regulators. The filing marks an escalation of Musk’s prior statements that have highlighted fake accounts as a threat to his proposed $44 billion deal to take over Twitter. The mercurial Musk agreed a deal in late April to purchase Twitter. But the proposed sale has stoked protest from critics who warn his stewardship will embolden hate groups and disinformation campaigns. US securities regulators have also pressed Musk for an explanation of an apparent delay in reporting his Twitter stock buys. Musk began making significant noise about fake accounts in mid-May, saying ...

EU deal on single mobile charging port likely on 7th

Image
EU countries and lawmakers are set to agree on a common charging port for mobile phones, tablets and headphones on June 7 when they meet to discuss a proposal that has been fiercely criticised by Apple, people familiar with the matter said. The proposal for a single mobile charging port was first broached by the EC more than a decade ago after iPhone and Android users complained about having to use different chargers for their phones. The former is charged from a Lightning cable while Android-based devices are powered using USB-C connectors. The trilogue next Tuesday will be the second and likely the final one between EU countries and EU lawmakers on the topic, an indication of a strong push to get a deal done, the people said. The EU lawmakers also want to include wireless charging systems to be harmonised by 2025, while the EU countries and the Commission want a longer lead-in period for technical reasons. Apple was not immediately available for comment. It has previously said t...

Patent paves way for Apple Watch camera

The patent's illustration describes that the wearer of the watch could also remove the watch housing from the band for more flexibility while shooting. A release mechanism would separate the watch housing from the band and also allow the user to take pictures with a camera place at the back of the watch. A LED is used as a flash to brighten up dark scenes. The screen will display viewfinder and captured images. The director of trust and safety at Meta, Emily Vacher, says "We know that the chances of finding a missing child increase when more people are on the lookout, especially in the first few hours. With this update, if an Amber Alert is activated by law enforcement and you are in the designated search area, the alert will now appear in your Instagram feed." Vacher said in her blog that the alerts were "rare and specific to the search area" and if users get an alert throug...

‘Zombie’ shark attacks prey just inches away from diver

In a terrifying episode of close encounter with an apex predator, a large 'zombie' shark attacked its prey just inches away from a stunned diver off the cost of Mexico. Euan Rannachan, 36, was at Guadalupe island, about 125 miles off the coast of mainland Mexico, when the great white came within sight and lingered in the water. The apex predator lingered around the filmmaker before attacking its prey. Euan films from a metal cage hanging from a boat in order to get the incredible close-up. The shark then swims to the top of the water before biting onto some bait and thrashing it around the water. While swimming off with his prey, the shark quickly opens her mouth, showing off her razor-sharp teeth, before managing to gulp it down even further. Police bust ‘FluBot’ cell phone scam

Image
A mobile phone scam dubbed FluBot has been busted by the police of 11 countries that spread around the world via fake text messages, Dutch and EU police said. Dutch cybercops led an operation in May targeting the malware, which infects Android phones using texts which pretend to be from a parcel firm or which say a person has a voicemail waiting. Hackers would then steal bank details from infected phones, which automatically sent messages to other mobiles in the user’s contact list, passing on the scam like a flu virus.  “To date, we have disconnected ten thousand victims from the FluBot network and prevented over 6.5 million spam text messages,” Dutch police said in a statement. The EU’s police agency Europol said FluBot was among “the fastest-spreading mobile malware to date” and was “able to spread like wildfire due to its ability to access an infected smartphone’s contacts.” Police had made the malware “inactive” but are still hunting the culprits, it said.  “This F...
